bacterial vaginosis- unknown facts and best kept secrets revealed.
Bacterial
vaginosis is one of the most common problems faced by women all over the
world every day. I know a lot of young girls face this problem. Unfortunately
they are not able to discuss this problem in public because of various social
taboos associated with BV. But I want them to come out of their shells and
discuss the problems openly. Trust me a brainstorming session and an open
discussion will surely solve your problem.
For a proper diagnosis of bacterial vaginosis, one should obtain a proper check up of the
swab from inside the vagina. The various criteria’s should be properly checked-
ü One
would experience a fishy odor on the wet mount.
ü This
characteristic test is called the whiff test
ü Small
amount of potassium hydroxide is added to a microscopic slide which contains
the vaginal discharge.
ü If
there is a presence of the characteristic fishy odor it is considered as a
positive whiff test and one can surely claim suggestive BV.
Pro biotic is useful in the
treatment of bacterial vaginosis but
according to experts they are really effective if combined with the use of
antibiotics. In early days BV was considered as a merely nuisance infection but
recent studies have proved that if BV is untreated it may lead to complication
like increased susceptibility of AIDS, HIV and other sexually transmitted
infection. In addition they create various complications for pregnant women.
o Loss
of acidity
o Your
vagina should be normally slightly acidic with a ph value of 3.8-4.2.
o Just
put a swab of your vaginal discharge in a litmus paper and check its acidity
o If
the ph value is greater than 4.5 it is alkaline and is suggestive of BV.
As per my findings I out of 3 girls will develop bacterial vaginosis and other similar
condition at some point in their lives. Let me tell you BV is one of the common
infections among girls. This mainly affects the vagina, the skin in the genital
area along with the urethra and the bladder. BV is mainly caused due to
overgrowth of bacteria. If you are a girl or a women at the stage of your
menopause and suffering from diabetes there is a likelihood of infected by BV.
There should be presence of clue cells on your
wet mount of your vagina.
Perform the whiff test by placing a drop of
sodium chloride solution on a slide containing your vaginal discharge.
If you are suffering from BV clue cells will be
visualized under the microscope.
We call them clue cells because they will
provide you the clue to the various reasons behind your discharge.
Clue cells are basically epithelial cells which
are coated with bacteria.
