Here is a fact, since most of these diets work on a calorie restriction principle you will find that they almost always work very well for the first few weeks. However, after some time (usually six or seven weeks) the effects of the diet begin to fade away and the dieter finds that his or her body has become resistant to the further weight loss/ fat loss.


       There is a very natural and scientific explanation for this phenomenon. Due to evolution over millions of years our body survived due to the ability to store energy efficiently (in the form of fat), when food was scarce and to use the energy for survival and propagation of our own species.

         When a person follows a calorie-restricted diet devoid of most fats, even essential fats, then his body quickly senses this and starts storing more and more fat in expectation for future periods of starvation. Therefore, most of weight lost in the initial stages of dieting is mostly due to loss of water and muscle mass. This is because our body has been programmed for survival in this way. Our body thinks fat is essential for storage but muscle is expendable, so it burns muscle mass for its energy requirements during calorie restriction phase.


          Later when the person comes out of dieting he often eats more than usual amount of calories and that too is in the form of unhealthy fats and starches. Since his body possesses less muscle than before, these extra calories are also quickly stored as fat. Remember, that muscle is the primary fat burning engine of the body and when this is lesser in mass more fat will be stored in future also.
       
         Our body has evolved over millions of years under harsh environments so it has learnt to put a series of barriers to prevent rapid weight loss in a short time. This always ensures we will survive during famine or natural disasters. But, unfortunately, this useful feature of our genes and physique has become a dilemma or even a burden for most of us who enjoy material comforts of a fast and easy modern life.


        Diet pills, programs or supplements without doubt work for a limited time only and then they fade away in their utility as weight control agents.
